Week 1 = done!
Date Created: 22:02:2012
6.2 miles = 10km! So, New Year, new training plan! The proper 16 week training plan started on the 2nd of January (thank you Full Potential, for letting me suffer from over-eating and sleep deprivation on the 1st Jan in peace!). This week actually started with a 'rest' day, which was a treat. I was on the 'Sub 5 hour' training plan however, over the last couple of months, with colds and bugs and all sorts, I wasn't able to get anywhere near up to speed ....

Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide!
Date Created: 22:02:2012
I thought by writing a Blog of my adventure from Couch to Marathon, I was exposing my trip to a wider audience, some of whom might be experiencing some of the same challenges and dilemmas. The interesting thing with a Blog is that you never quite know who is reading it – if anyone ! When, during Saturday night my work email pinged with a message from the USA from an inspirational leader I have worked for in the past and signs off “Remember, no excuses, ....

What a whopper
Date Created: 13:02:2012
I am off to Portugal. Well, ok I am not actually. In fact this is a complete lie, but if you follow this post you’ll sympathise with me and back my case to be sent free of charge by my coach. Here are the facts 1) It’s absolutely freezing here in Yorkshire and the pavements are icy2) I find treadmills boring.3) I had to design indoor Kenyan Hills today . I set up for 90 secs uphill at 9 degrees, and then flatlined for 90 secs. I did 9 sets of these. ....

What exercise can I claim for snow clearing?
Date Created: 09:02:2012
Can I claim snow clearing is a threshold piece of training ? It is at the threshold level of testing my patience.  Perhaps I can claim it as interval training ? I kept stopping mid way through and cursing myself for starting the job – technically that’s an interval.  However, suggesting that I had been building “Kenyan Hills” of snow would be pushing things a little. I find treadmills boring -  but that’s been the only option in this ....

Group Training Day With Full Potential
Date Created: 31:01:2012
It was difficult for me to know what to expect from my first training session with the other London Marathon runners from Full Potential. I was excited as I boarded the 7am from York to Kings Cross, but also a little nervous. Being so new to running (as if the title of this Blog needed explaining) I was in truth a little apprehensive. Was I a mile behind the other runners? Was my version of Threshold running the same as Keith’s our coach? ( I’ve already blogged about our different....

Advice from Sir Matthew Pinsent
Date Created: 31:01:2012
Another late evening and if I was even for one minute thinking about not going out tonight, I have Sir Matthew Pinsent’s kind words to me resonating in my ears.Sir Matthew works closely with Nestlé through Team Nestlé and when I nabbed him on Twitter telling him about “From Couch to Marathon”, he kindly wrote to me saying“whoop whoop! make an achievable plan for training and race day and stick to both – never ditch a training session!&rd....

Confused, lost, unclear, perplexed . . .take your pick !
Date Created: 31:01:2012
I think I’m about 13 weeks from the London Marathon now. With help and support,  I am on schedule and meeting the expectations on my coaches at Full Potential and also ensuring that Tom Robinson, my physio, still gets to smile at me. But, I am now beginning to wonder about the Marathon weekend itself. When should I travel down from York? Where should I stay? Do I want to stay in a hotel close to the start with an extra pasta dinner for £350 ? (no thanks !) Do I ....

What a plonker Rodney!
Date Created: 18:01:2012
I sighed and sat on the sofa in the lounge. It was 9.30pm and it had been a long day. “Excuse me, what are you doing?” said Nicky the Marathon wife. “It’s my rest day,” I replied. “Time to put my feet up.” “It’s not your rest day because it’s Tuesday and your rest day is Wednesday. And incidentally you can make us all tea tomorrow as you’re resting as I’m working late.” “I rest ....

Good to meet you Mr Hills? The pleasure is all yours.
Date Created: 18:01:2012
So, I finally get to meet the infamous Mr Hills, or Mr Kenyan Hills to give him his full name. Here’s the official “Full Potential” version of what they entail from Keith our Marathon Guru. Kenyan Hills   Hill running develops strength in your muscles and tendons without putting them under the type of stress they are exposed to during faster running. Run up a 10% gradient for 90 seconds to two minutes at a steady pace. Turn immediat....

Please Sir can I have some more?
Date Created: 18:01:2012
All things are good at the moment. The Silent Assassin (aka Top Sports physio Tom Robinson) is pleased with my physical progress, especially with my nemesis which is my Plantar (posh talk for heel troubles!). I’ve run for 90 mins and even dabbled with some Kenyan Hills. I feel pretty good ! In fact I felt good enough to show a  little bravery and asked the coaches  at Full Potential if I could step up my daily programme. Now, here’s the bit where they kno....
